Former USC center fielder Davy Gregg signed Sunday with the Chicago Cubs, who drafted him in the 27th round this past Wednesday.
Gregg, who batted .301 with 13 steals in his junior season, will skip his final year of eligibility.
“This was the opportunity of a lifetime, and I didn’t want to ever regret (not signing),” said Gregg, the 820th overall pick.
“There was a chance that next year, I wouldn’t even get drafted.”
Gregg, a Florence native and former Wilson High standout, will join the Mesa (Ariz.) Cubs, Chicago’s rookie league affiliate.
He said he will return to USC for the fall semester to complete requirements for his degree in management.
“I was torn for three or four days about whether to leave,” Gregg said. |
