USC reported 10 secondary NCAA violations during the six-month period between Jan. 1-June 30, including two involving the Gamecocks’ football team.
Responding to a Freedom of Information Act request by The State, the school released the self-reports Thursday, a day after its three-year, major infractions case wrapped up.
The violations involving the football team included an assistant coach
providing transportation to the relative of a prospect because there was no room
in the car in which the recruit was traveling. Also, USC reported that fans
provided homemade snacks to football players after Thursday practices in the
fall.
The other secondary violations:
• Ron Stephenson, a USC booster, allowed six
baseball players to play free golf at a course he owned, a violation the school
had reported previously.
• An assistant swimming coach provided divers
with per diem money for a dinner meal that was paid for by an athlete’s
parents.
• An assistant women’s swimming coach took
recruits and their parents to dinner in conjunction with home visits on two
occasions.
• Head swimming coach Don Gibb required
athletes to practice after competition.
• The women’s basketball and volleyball teams
used photos of current players in camp brochures.
• Men’s basketball director of operations Bill
Old scheduled the Gamecocks to travel to the NIT in New York City more than 48
hours before the start of the first game.
• Track coach Curtis Frye allowed an athlete
who was not on the squad list to compete.
• The sports information office released
information on men’s basketball recruits before they had signed letters of
intent. |
