A recruiting class numbering 23 reported for classes today at USC including their two most highly prized signees, SS Reese Havens and 1B Justin Smoak. Those were two of the drafted Gamecock recruits who could have signed with pro teams before going to class this morning.
One signee who did not report was RHP David Anderson of White Knoll. He is enrolling at Coastal Carolina. Two late additions to the class are RHP Chris Munn (6-4 200) of Manatee JC, FL and 2B Travis Adair (5-9 150) of Broome.

USC recruits in class — The University of South Carolina's top two recruits — first baseman Justin Smoak of Stratford High School and shortstop Reese Havens of Bishop England — went to class Thursday, which means both turned down professional opportunities.
Both could have signed professional contracts until they attended class. Now they can't leave USC for pro baseball until after their junior years.

Information: Coaches also dread first day of school
| Posted by icatcher on Friday, August 19 @ Eastern Daylight Time (816 reads)
Ray Tanner survivied another first day of classes on Thursday. The 47-year-old baseball coach gets the same sinking feeling in his stomach every August when South Carolina professors open their classroom doors for a new academic year.
There have been times when Tanner went home feeling sick after the first day of class. This time, Tanner won out in his annual campaign to get high school kids to attend college. Justin Smoak and Reese Havens, two talented players from the Charleston area, turned their backs on professional baseball and the millions of dollars that was waved under their noses by attending their first classes at USC on Thursday.

Ray Tanner said that as late as Thursday morning he was concerned star recruits Justin Smoak and Reese Havens would not be members of USC’s team for the 2006 season.
But Smoak and Havens attended their 8 a.m. classes, making them ineligible to sign with the pro teams that drafted them in June.

Alumni: Powell on sidelines rehabbing left knee
| Posted by icatcher on Sunday, August 07 @ Eastern Daylight Time (327 reads)
The Oakland Athletics’ farm system is full of “live arms,” the slang term for hard-throwing pitchers, but it also has at least one dead leg.
That would be Landon Powell’s surgically reconstructed left leg, the knee of which now is supported by a ligament extracted from a donor.

Alumni: Big-league dreams

He's been up for about an hour, but shortstop Steven Tolleson is already killing time.
It's 10:30 a.m., and Tolleson has just returned from the local hospital -- where, through his minor league team, he lifts weights four times a week in keeping with the routine developed while at South Carolina.
The 2002 Dorman graduate sits in the upstairs den with his laptop, surfing the Web while his host family packs boxes for its upcoming move down the road.

Alumni: Former USC pitcher Aaron Rawl, promoted to Class A Lakewood (N.J.)
| Posted by icatcher on Sunday, July 17 @ Eastern Daylight Time (341 reads)
Former USC pitcher Aaron Rawl, promoted to Class A Lakewood (N.J.) on Wednesday, got his first South Atlantic League win a couple of hours after showing up for the BlueClaws’ afternoon game against West Virginia.
After flying in that morning, the Phillies prospect dashed out to FirstEnergy Park, got there in time to pitch the final two outs of the seventh inning, then sat back and watched his teammates score four runs in the bottom half to take a 7-6 lead. Then, the rain came, shortening the game and making a winner out of Rawl. ...
